Staircase Loop Hike

Staircase Loop Hike

Experience the old growth forests as you trek alongside the winding North Fork of the serene Skokomish river front in the Olympic National Park. Home to some of the largest trees in the world, the Olympic wilderness transports you back in time to a land of giants, mossy floors and ferns galore.  Come see the remnants of a fallen giant and the home to migrating salmon runs.

We depart from Union and drive along scenic 101 with views across the Hood Canal before heading west on the winding road which takes us along the banks of the nearly nine mile long, glacial blue Lake Cushman. In less than one hour we arrive at the entrance to the Olympic National Park where the hike begins. Taking in the beauty of the Skokomish Wilderness, we hike along the staircase rapids trail, a 2 mile loop. For those looking for a bit of a longer hike, we have the option to continue on the North Fork Skokomish trail before returning to the car.

This trail is very well maintained and is a great hike for all ages and abilities. Because of its low elevation, this is a great hike year round and is even beautiful in the rain!
