Olympic Coast Expedition

Olympic Coast Expedition

Experience a multitude of terrain as you trek on the peninsula’s northwestern coast through forests, along the beach, across tidal lands and and climb up and down the headlands. This adventure along Washington’s rugged coastline features astonishing rocky outcroppings, pristine sandy beaches and vibrant tidal pools full of life. The route requires some steep ascending and descending using hand lines as well as slippery conditions making this a challenging backpacking trip. This hike takes us through lands historically inhabited by Makah people and their ancestors. We find petroglyphs along our trek as well as pass by the “Ozette site” which is the location of one of the most significant discoveries of cultural artifacts and on the Peninsula.

On the morning of our trip we will leave Union and drive four hours to the Makah reservation to our trailhead. Our total mileage for day one will be about 4.3 miles. We begin in lush coastal trees and end at the stunning Shi Shi beach, which will be our camp for the night. Day two we will begin our hike around point of arches as the tide heads out and continue 5.7 miles through tidal flats and up and down steep headlands, ending on a beautiful beach stroll. Day 3 will be our shortest day but leaves us with ample time to explore the tide pools and rock croppings of this section of coast. We will hike 2.1 miles crossing the ozette river in the morning and wrapp around the most westernly point of the lower 48 states. We will pass the archeological site of the Makah people before reaching our final beach side camp. Day four 5.9 miles to our ending trailhead at .

While the mileage for this trip is not especially high, the route requires some steep ascending and descending using hand lines as well as slippery conditions making this a challenging backpacking trip. We think this is a great trip for folks who are regularly physically active and have some hiking experience.
