Grove of Ancient Trees
Grove of Ancient Trees
This forested hike is located in the Skokomish wilderness along the South Fork of the Skokomish River. Enjoy the sights and smells of the old growth forest with some of the best flora and fauna in the Olympics.
From Union we drive through the Skokomish valley and then up into the Olympic National Forest, an area popular among locals for just 45 minutes before reaching our trailhead. The 4.3 mile “Grove of Ancient Trees” ‘ loop is one you won’t find advertised elsewhere. For those looking for a longer hike we have the option to continue further on the South Fork Skokomish trail before returning to the car.
This is a hike for everyone for almost every season. Accessible by car from May to October, enjoy spring trilliums, summer berries, and fall mushrooms on this 4.3 mile loop.
Optional Stop
On our drive home after the hike, an optional short detour will take us high above the Skokomish River to the site of a historic train trestle, the High Steel Bridge.
